Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon is a proud member of The Herring Alliance, a coalition working to protect and restore ocean wildlife and ecosystems along the Atlantic coast of the United States through precautionary and science-based management of forage fish such as herring, mackerel, menhaden, river herring and shad.

Forage fish are critical to sustaining healthy populations of avian and marine predators, and the Herring Alliance works to ensure that fisheries management decisions factor in the needs of those predators when managing their marine prey. Coalition members range from small watershed groups to national organizations, and among our bird-focused member groups are National Audubon Society, Richmond Audubon Society and of course, Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society. Our founding member, The Pew Charitable Trusts, is currently supporting a research projectled by Dr. Steven Kress, Vice President for Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society, to study the link between forage fish and puffin breeding success in Maine.
